What is an iTero Wellness Scan?

An iTero Wellness Scan represents the latest in dental imaging technologies. Using a low-power laser, rather than radiation, the iTero Wellness Scan harnesses the power of light to capture 3D images of all of the structures in the mouth, including the teeth, gums, and tissues. This quick, noninvasive scan yields real-time images that provide you and your dentist with a clear picture of your overall oral health.

How Dentists Perform iTero Wellness Scans

The iTero scanner is attached to a small wand that is moved over the teeth, gums, and throughout the mouth, capturing pictures from various angles. This creates a real-time 3D model, in just minutes. The scan may be performed by a dental assistant, dental hygienist, or your dentist.

Once the images are on the screen, your dentist will likely use them to explain any potential problems with your teeth or gums. The images also serve as digital impressions if you require restorative dental treatments such as dental crowns or bridges, a custom oral appliance, or if you’re planning for cosmetic dental treatments such as Invisalign or dental veneers

Benefits of an iTero Wellness Scan

An iTero Wellness Scan provides numerous benefits, without causing any discomfort.

  • Early cavity detection
  • Early gum disease detection
  • Early detection of wear on the teeth
  • Improved accuracy in planning for orthodontics
  • Improved accuracy in planning for cosmetic treatments
  • Improved accuracy in planning for restorative treatments
  • Expedited dental appointments
  • Effective monitoring of gum recession
  • Eliminates the need for messy putty impressions
  • Easier for patients with sensitive gag reflexes
  • Enhanced patient comfort
  • Provides a preview of what your smile will look like after Invisalign
  • Greener technology (all digital = no waste)

Why Would I Need an iTero Wellness Scan?

Your dentist may use the iTerro Wellness scanner to help diagnose dental problems. For example, they are very efficient at capturing cavities between the teeth (interproximal cavities). Likewise, an iTero scan may reveal tiny fractures that may not even be visible on an X-ray.

An iTero scan may also be included as part of a comprehensive oral exam. Because the digital scans create such high-quality images, they serve as a highly accurate oral health record, which your dentist can refer to as the years pass. For example, previous scans can be compared to measure gum recession, and monitor wear and tear on the teeth. The scans are safe for pediatric and adult patients.

Frequently Asked Questions about iTero Scans

How long does an iTero Wellness Scan take?

The scan takes just a few minutes, as the wand is moved throughout the mouth.

Will my dentist show me my iTero Scan?

Yes!  The iTero scan’s high-resolution images are displayed for patients on chairside screens. The images are incredibly useful for both dentists and patients to discuss oral health concerns and plan for appropriate treatment.
